Their trio of star attackers – Messi, Mbappe and Neymar – were all in the starting line-up.

And the two combined for a superb team goal to open the scoring in the 11th minute.

Nuno Mendes got the assist and Mbappe scored the goal, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Messi’s sublime pass in the build-up.

Auxerre were defending very deep but they were cut apart by the 35-year-old magician.

Messi picked up the ball roughly 25 yards out, spotted the run of Mendes and then found him with a lovely chipped ball.

Mendes squared the ball to Mbappe who managed to find the net from close range. View the goal below…

It was a superb finish from Mbappe but Messi’s pass was so good that the majority of PSG players ran to him to celebrate rather than going to the Frenchman.

Marco Verratti, Neymar and Achraf Hakimi all went to Messi before celebrating with Mbappe.

Messi’s pass won’t go down as a goal or an assist, but it deserved to. It really was a sensational pass.

PSG were unable to add to their lead in the remainder of the first half.

But they managed to assert their dominance early in the second half as they took the game away from Auxerre.

Carlos Soler doubled PSG’s lead in the 51st minute, before Hakimi bagged PSG’s third six minutes later.

The Parisian giants went on to win 5-0 with Renato Sanches and Hugo Ekitike also getting on the scoresheet.

Messi came through the match unscathed and was subbed off with 17 minutes remaining.

He will now turn his attention to the World Cup, where he will be looking to lead Argentina to glory in Qatar.
